Bergen Electrical Substation
JFK International Airport
The Bergen Substation Replacement Project replaces the existing Bergen and Van Wyck 5-kilovolt (5KV) electrical substations at JFK International Airport with a new, single Bergen 5KV substation. Under the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), this critical infrastructure project ensures reliable power for JFK airside/landside facilities and includes constructing a new building for electrical equipment, with planned demolition of old sites to follow.
Azar Design Co collaborated with CHA Consulting to provide fire detection and suppression systems for the new substation. Design included a new water service and fire pump, multiple clean agent, deluge, pre-action, and wet pipe sprinkler systems. The choice of detection technologies, such as smoke and heat detectors, was crucial, as was the design of alarm notification systems to alert personnel effectively.
The sprinkler system was designed around key selections for the appropriate type, whether wet pipe, dry pipe, or pre-action, based on environmental conditions and risk profiles. The design ensures effective coverage with optimal sprinkler head placement and includes a reliable water supply system with necessary backups.
During the construction phase, Azar supported complex team coordination with architects and engineers to seamlessly integrate these systems into the project plan. Our team provided oversight during installation, ensuring compliance with design specifications. Rigorous system testing and troubleshooting were essential for addressing installation complexities with promptness.
The project was delivered using a design-build method, to include the full integration of key design and construction services and professional coordination of construction activities.
