Cross Bronx Expressway
5 Bridges Rehabilitation & Replacement Project
Azar Design Co is collaborating with Hardesty & Hanover to support the preservation and extended life of five (5) bridges along the Cross Bronx Expressway. In-depth inspection on all five bridges revealed deterioration on the underside of the bridges, several structural flags, nonconforming and nonstandard features that require comprehensive rehabilitation. In addition, this project adds construction of a new exit ramp for direct access from Bronx River Parkway to the Cross Bronx Expressway.
Azar’s Landscape Architecture Studio is focused on addressing the challenges of resiliency and equity in public infrastructure design while integrating safe, active, alternative transportation systems. By connecting existing resources like the Bronx River Greenway to the project’s pedestrian and cyclist networks, we aim to create healthy, sustainable mobility options while enhancing the ecological health of the city’s green spaces through green infrastructure practices.
Our team is providing Project Management and design support for the new proposed pedestrian and bicycle facility shared-use-path (SUP) that will provide access to the Bronx River Parkway. SUP design includes compliance with regulations and best practices for ped/bike facilities, aesthetic programs, green infrastructure, and wayfinding/identity/place-making. We’re providing invasive species management planning, mitigation planning, tree inventory and soil management methods. Extensive tree planting plans and details will mitigate project impacts and encourage landscape restoration, while providing enhancements within the Bronx River Greenway commensurate with a world-class greenway and public park.
Azar’s design team is developing a preliminary Work Zone Traffic Control Plan for the Design Approval Document and final Construction Documents involving complete city traffic planning, local roads, signage, and maintenance protection of traffic. Additional design scope includes retaining wall design, and our team is providing support for engineering cost estimating.
Our environmental team provided an individual NYSDOT 4(f) statement, coordinated with a certified arborist for a tree survey of the project site, developed wetland reporting with evaluation of alternative impacts, and prepared all required permits and certifications.
Our survey team performed supplemental survey and mapping and coordinated with existing mapping, set secondary project controls, performed geotechnical and underground utility surveys, research ownership and property lines, and developed an Abstract Request Map.
