Exchange Street Station
As Buffalo’s main active intercity rail depot, the Exchange Street Station serves multiple Amtrak routes. The new facility modernizes the original 60+ year old building that was failing to meet Amtrak’s standards for design and accessibility.
Azar, as part of the Design-Build team led by Hohl-Scrufari, collaborated with partners from New York State to create a distinctly New York facility featuring retail and food tasting opportunities to showcase local products.
Situated on the original footprint, the new station is elevated and closer to Exchange Street, improving accessibility and visibility. The original low-level platform is replaced with a longer train-level platform for easier boarding under new lighting and an elegant canopy.
The seamless intermodal hub connects travelers directly to the Erie Canal Harbor station for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) Metro Rail under covered pedestrian access, while increased seating space accommodates additional train routes and future expansion of intercity bus services.
