Stony Creek Bridge Replacement

CR 152 over Stony Creek

Azar Design Co designed the locally-administered federal aid bridge reconstruction and slight realignment of CR 152. This section of roadway sits in an open area of Jefferson County where vehicles often exceeded posted speed limits.

Running through a steep grade with a sub-standard curve and limited sight distance, accident prevention was a priority that influenced final design. Additional challenges of the original bridge included limited drainage, which in combination with it’s super-elevation, led to ice sheeting during winter months.

Azar worked closely with NYSDOT and the County to mitigate the challenges of the original structure and alignment, making key safety improvements while keeping well-managed construction costs. An accelerated design schedule allowed construction to begin early, giving the contractor a full season that would limit work zone traffic. Our services included survey & mapping, environmental, preliminary and final design, bidding, construction assistance and construction inspection.

The contractor used innovative construction techniques to achieve early completion including:

  • A Porta-Dam as the cofferdam, limiting installation time and protecting the work area.
  • A walk-through prior to installation that ensured every detail was verified.
  • Beam launching with cranes on both sides of the waterway for rapid superstructure installation; completed within a few hours.
  • Quick, open communication and effective collaboration with Azar’s design team and the County to address unanticipated challenges.

The bridge was opened to traffic in within one construction season and the project finished approximately 5% under bid.
