SUNY Niagara’s new Learning Commons serves as a hub for student life, combining library, tutoring, and social spaces. A central space for campus community, the 4-story, 88,000 sf building makes use of the previously underutilized courtyard between buildings D and E.

Opened to enhance student success, it features modern technology, study areas, and dining options, acting as a focal point for the campus community.

Azar Design Co provided architectural, engineering, environmental and surveying services for the building, which now houses a media center, information technology administrative offices, data center, student daycare facility, art gallery and instructional rooms.

Azar’s architecture team provided compete design for the substantial renovation of Building D, including the main level of the Henrietta Lewis Library. Upgrades include replacement of existing elevator, replacement of aged building systems including the introduction of sprinkler systems.

Limited food services spaces were incorporated, and existing classroom renovations took place to allow for interface with the Learning Commons and the existing Humanities Department.

Damage repairs occurred to the building’s exterior, which experienced significant delamination and damage from escalating water infiltration including paver deck roof replacement.

Azar’s civil engineering and landscape architecture team delivered site and landscape design including entry plazas, plantings, furnishings, grading and drainage, and utility design.
