Library Renovation
P.S. 116K (The Elizabeth L. Farrell School) in Brooklyn, NY is a four-story brick and terracotta landmark constructed between 1897 and 1899. As one of the few New York City schools remaining from the 19th century, its designated an Individual Landmark by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission and is eligible under the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
Azar Design Co is leading the school’s library renovation, transforming a long-dormant second-floor space into a modern, multifunctional reading room serving students and parents alike. Three existing rooms are being combined into a single open space, with original arched openings exposed and restored. Historic trim work including base moldings, window casings, and wainscoting is being repaired and refinished throughout. Original wood flooring assemblies are being rebuilt, damaged plaster removed and replaced, and existing windows carefully protected during construction.
The space is designed to honor the building’s historic character while meeting the functional demands of a contemporary learning environment. Upgrades bring the building into full ADA compliance, encompassing accessible restroom fixtures, reconfigured lavatories, powered door actuators, compliant thresholds, updated signage, and new drinking fountains with bottle fillers on the second floor.
