Canalway Trail: Mohawk to Ilion
Azar Design Co provided multidisciplinary design services for a one-mile section of the Empire State Trail, part of the Canalway Trail system from Mohawk to Ilion, NY. Developed for the NYS Thruway Authority Canal Design Bureau, multiple funding issues led to several delays and changes in scope, requiring Azar’s team to adapt to new project goals and site conditions.
Civil engineers provided detailed bid-ready plans for a 10-foot-wide shared-use path, including stormwater management and drainage solutions near existing wetlands and ADA-compliant features throughout the corridor.
The landscape features incorporate facility amenities near the marina including benches, kiosks, bike racks and native plantings.
Structural engineers designed a pedestrian/cyclist bridge spanning the adjacent creek.
Azar’s survey crew performed boundary and topography surveys, including updated mapping following multiple delays. The project was converted from metric to English units.
Environmental scientists performed a wetland delineation and discovered a capped landfill, all necessitating adjustments to the trail alignment for minimized excavation and environmental impact.
