Palisades Road Bridge Replacement

© Azar Design Co

Warren County's Department of Public Works retained Azar Design Co to provide design services for the replacement of Palisades Road Bridge (County Route 26) over Brant Lake Inlet by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), in compliance with NYSDOT’s “Locally Administered Federal Aid Procedures Manual.”

Our services included survey & mapping, environmental, preliminary and final design, bidding, construction assistance and construction inspection.

The abutment substructure units that supported the previously existing bridge superstructure were severely deteriorated, resulting in low element condition ratings and reduced General Recommendation and Sufficiency Ratings for the bridge. Therefore, the replacement structure has remained on a similar horizontal alignment with minimal vertical alignment adjustment as necessary to address the hydraulic opening and proposed structure type.

The bridge cross-section increased width to accommodate NYSDOT, AASHTO, and County bridge standards. Azar constructed drainage, utilities, guide rail, and adjacent landscaping improvements. New signage and pavement markings for the entire project corridor meet current MUTCD standards. A complete hydraulic analysis was required.

A privately owned lakefront beach with a retaining wall is located along the reconstructed roadway. Changes to the roadway profile required replacing the existing retaining wall with a new prefabricated wall system. To minimize the impact on the privately owned beach, Azar Engineers utilized a Redi-Rock product. In addition, new stairs were constructed to provide access to the beach. The beach owner was frequently engaged during construction to ensure their satisfaction with the finished retaining wall. After the completion of the retaining wall, the beach was restored to its original condition
