Cross Bronx Expressway Rehabilitation

© Azar Design Co

Azar Design Co is collaborating with Hardesty & Hanover to support the preservation and extended life of five (5) bridges along the Cross Bronx Expressway. This project was initially taken to the PS&E level before being repackaged to add the scope of a flyover ramp and connector road. The new scope involves redevelopment of the design report for a new Design Approval.

In-depth inspection on all five bridges revealed deterioration on the underside of the bridges, several structural flags, nonconforming and nonstandard features that require comprehensive rehabilitation. In addition, this project adds construction of a new exit ramp for direct access from Bronx River Parkway to the Cross Bronx Expressway, and the development of a connector road extending from Southern Boulevard to Bronx River Avenue.

Azar’s design team is developing a preliminary Work Zone Traffic Control Plan for the Design Approval Document and final Construction Documents involving complete city traffic planning, local roads, signage, and maintenance protection of traffic.

Our Surveyors performed supplemental survey and mapping and coordinated with existing mapping, set secondary project control, performed geotechnical and underground utility surveys, research ownership and property lines, and developed an Abstract Request Map.

Our Environmental Team is providing an individual 4(f) statement, coordinating with a certified arborist for a tree survey of the project site, developing wetland report with evaluation of alternative impacts, and preparing required permits and certifications.

Azar's Landscape Architecture Studio is providing Project Management and design support for a new proposed pedestrian and bicycle facility shared-use-path (SUP). SUP design includes compliance with regulations and best practices for ped/bike facilities, aesthetic programs, green infrastructure, and wayfinding/identity/place-making. Additional tasks include extensive tree planting to mitigate project impacts and landscape restoration and enhancements within the Bronx River Greenway commensurate with a world-class greenway and public park.

The current project is in the Design Development of RFP/Indicative and demonstrative drawings. The project will be let as design-build and valued at approximately ~$1 billion.
